Foundation Support

Becoming a foundation supporter of LA Opera is a unique opportunity to partner with one of America's largest and most diverse opera companies. Your support represents a meaningful investment in the arts and in the diverse community of Los Angeles, enhancing your company or foundation mission. Contributions toward productions, special programs, or one of LA Opera's many education and community initiatives will provide your foundation with increased recognition as a cultural and civic leader, and help to extend your philanthropic reach into the Los Angeles community.

SPOTLIGHT: THE DAN MURPHY FOUNDATION

It is because of the passion and the dedication of philanthropic organizations like the Dan Murphy Foundation that special initiatives such as LA Opera at the Cathedral have become important touchstones of Los Angeles cultural life.

As part of LA Opera’s centenary celebration of British composer Benjamin Britten, LA Opera at the Cathedral will reprise one of its most beloved community productions, Noah’s Flood (Noye’s Fludde). A master of making modern music accessible, Britten composed Noah’s Flood specifically to be staged in a church. In April 2013, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will host this year’s production of Noah’s Flood, which pairs over 400 children and adult performers with LA Opera professionals in two free performances to an audience of over 6,000.

Now in its seventh year, LA Opera at the Cathedral is advancing a collaborative opera tradition in the heart of downtown Los Angeles that would not be possible without the generosity and foresight of the Dan Murphy Foundation. It was the Foundation’s initial underwriting support of Noah’s Flood in 2007 that encouraged collaboration between LA Opera and the Cathedral in the first place. Subsequently underwriting Judas Maccabaeus and The Festival Play of Daniel, the Foundation supports a communal experience that reminds us of the power of music to illuminate our hearts and minds.

Founded in 1957, the Dan Murphy Foundation was established by Sir Daniel Donahue and Bernadine Murphy to honor the memory of her father, Dan Murphy. Promoting the spiritual value of the arts, the Foundation’s support of LA Opera at the Cathedral brings opera out of the theater and directly to the people just as it opens the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to the diverse LA community, making it a house for all peoples.
