Tosca Campaign
Our 2012/13 season continues LA Opera’s commitment to producing opera of the highest artistic level with six dynamic productions new to Los Angeles. From Verdi’s powerful The Two Foscari, to Wagner’s legendary tale of The Flying Dutchman, to Rossini’s charming interpretation of the Cinderella story, LA Opera’s creative vision reimagines the classical works, inspiring new audiences and generations of opera lovers.
In May, we bring one of opera’s most fiery love triangles to the stage. Puccini’s Tosca is the tale of a prima donna trapped between her lover and a scheming police chief who will stop at nothing in his lust for her. With soprano Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role and Plácido Domingo conducting, this production is set amidst the repression and rebellion of a troubled Europe, turning the opulence of the baroque era into a dark world coming apart at the seams. Yet, against this gritty backdrop, director John Caird gives us the hope that love can somehow pull it back together – if not in this life, then in the next.
