Tamerlano
WFMT July 10, 2010

George Frideric Handel's rarely-performed work recounts the tale of the Turkish sultan Bajazet, performed by tenor Plácido Domingo, who has been defeated and taken prisoner by the Tartar emperor Tamerlano (countertenor Bejun Mehta). Bajazet would rather die than remain captive; only his great love for his daughter Asteria (soprano Sarah Coburn) prevents him from taking his own life. Tamerlano, however, is in love with his prisoner's daughter, who accepts his marriage proposal in order to take revenge by murdering him on their wedding night. The riveting tale of enslavement, infidelity and suicide unfolds with tragic grandeur and a dramatically compelling score.
Conducted by William Lacey and sung in Italian. Estimated running time: three hours, forty-five minutes.

The Barber of Seville (Il Barbiere di Siviglia)
WFMT July 17, 2010

In Gioacchino Rossini's perennially popular The Barber of Seville, the resourceful barber Figaro (baritone Nathan Gunn) comes to the aid of his former master, Count Almaviva (tenor Juan Diego Flórez). The handsome Count is deliriously in love with the ravishing young Rosina (mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato), a ward of old Doctor Bartolo (bass-baritone Bruno Praticò), who is determined to marry her himself. Rossini's razor-sharp wit glints through every scene in this riotous yet musically elegant comedy, one of the most popular in the operatic repertoire.
Conducted by Michele Mariotti and sung in Italian. Estimated running time: three hours, thirty minutes.

Wotan's insistent wife Fricka is Michelle DeYoung a "remarkably powerful mezzo" (Opera Today). Also featured are Arnold Bezuyen as Loge, Gordon Hawkins as Alberich and Graham Clark as Mime.
Conducted by James Conlon and sung in German. Estimated running time: three hours.

Die Walküre
WFMT July 31, 2010

As Wagner's epic Ring cycle continues, Wotan, king of the gods, hopes that his mortal son Siegmund might help him regain the ring. But Siegmund's adulterous and incestuous love for his twin sister Sieglinde infuriates Fricka, goddess of marriage. Brünnhilde (the titular Valkyrie, one of Wotan's divine warrior maiden daughters) attempts to protect Siegmund, but her bold disobedience leads to a terrible punishment. Starring Plácido Domingo and soprano Anja Kampe, "the definitive Sieglinde and Siegmund of this century's first decade" (The Washington Post). A world-celebrated cast includes Linda Watson (Brünnhilde), Michelle DeYoung (Fricka), Vitalij Kowaljow (Wotan) and Eric Halfvarson (Hunding).
Conducted by James Conlon and sung in German. Estimated running time: five hours.

Siegfried
WFMT August 7, 2010

Nothing can stop the heroic young Siegfried: With his mighty sword he slays the dragon Fafner, claims the coveted golden ring, defeats the great god Wotan in battle, and, risking all, walks through fire to awaken the beautiful sleeping warrior-goddess, Brünnhilde, with a kiss. This bold fairy tale contains some of the Ring's most exhilarating music, including Siegfried's joyous forging song, the evocative "Forest Murmurs" and an ecstatic love duet that brings the opera to a euphoric finale. Starring John Treleaven as Siegfried, Vitalij Kowaljow as the Wanderer, Graham Clark as Mime and Linda Watson as Brünnhilde.
Conducted by James Conlon and sung in German. Estimated running time: five hours, forty minutes.

Götterdämmerung
WFMT August 14, 2010

The curse of the ring runs its course in the final chapter of Wagner's epic music drama. The Twilight of the Gods begins with the rapturous love shared by Brünnhilde (soprano Linda Watson) and Siegfried (tenor John Treleaven). But the evil Hagen (bass Eric Halfvarson) plots against Siegfried, first administering a magic potion of forgetfulness and then murdering him. Making the ultimate sacrifice, Brünnhilde heroically cleanses the ring of its curse, and the reign of the gods comes to an end in a spectacular finale unparalleled in opera. From the opening prologue drenched in doom to the dramatic climax of the final apocalyptic "Immolation Scene," Götterdämmerung soars to heights of heroism and proclaims the redemptive power of love.
Conducted by James Conlon and sung in German. Estimated running time: five hours, forty-five minutes.

The Stigmatized (Die Gezeichneten)
WFMT August 21, 2010

LA Opera has won acclaim for its Recovered Voices project, an ongoing exploration of masterpieces by the lost generation of composers affected by the Holocaust. Born in 1878, Franz Schreker was one of the most celebrated operatic composers of his time. His rapturously evocative late-Romantic tragedy, The Stigmatized, is heard in its U.S. premiere at LA Opera. Tenor Robert Brubaker stars as Alviano, a deformed nobleman has created an idyllic island of great beauty as an escape from his tortured existence. A beautiful painter, Carlotta (soprano Anja Kampe), mistakes her pity toward him for love; she then turns to a handsome rival, the debauched Tamare (baritone Martin Gantner), with disastrous results.
Conducted by James Conlon and sung in German. Estimated running time: three hours, thirty minutes.
