OPERA 101

LA Opera welcomes teachers to the world of opera!

A program for the uninitiated, Opera 101 is for the teacher who knows little or nothing about opera but would love to earn up to two LAUSD salary point credits or UCLA Extension Credit while learning more. Full of fun and practical ways to get to know and embrace this art form, Opera 101 will provide teachers with materials, strategies and lesson plans. These resources directly address the visual and performing arts framework. Hear the music and meet the artists and designers involved in LA Opera productions.

DATES: All sessions take place on Saturdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

  • October 16, 2010 - All About Italian Opera
  • January 22, 2011 - All About German Opera
  • March 26, 2011 - All About American Opera
  • April 30, 2011 - TBD

Training programs take place at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Homework required for salary point credit. Additional fees apply for UCLA Extension Credit. Enrollment in programs does not include admission to main stage opera productions.

  • Requirements: Registration is primarily for actively employed teachers. Registration for retired teachers will be limited to 10% of the total enrollment.

  • Fee: $20 per session or the complete series for $60 (25% discount).
    Parking & refreshments included in fee. You must register in advance to be guaranteed free parking.

OPERA FOR EDUCATORS

LA Opera's award-winning Opera for Educators series explores opera from an interdisciplinary point of view.

Gain insight about opera and the historical context in which it was created. Discuss opera as history and art, as well as language and social commentary. Learn all about the stars and artists of the opera world, as well as the production and business of opera. Enjoy recitals and rehearsals, and receive special opera news updates. Up to three LAUSD salary points or equivalent UCLA Extension credits are offered for participating teachers.
