IN-SCHOOL OPERA FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
An intensive introduction to the operatic art form, as well as cross-curricular connections to literature, social science and language skills.
This ten-week program uses opera to promote student self-esteem and teamwork. This year, we premiere a new opera by Eli Villanueva and Leslie Stevens, Poston, which is set during WWII in a Japanese internment camp. The opera tells the story of a Japanese teenage girl who forms a bond with a Native American boy while living at the Poston Internment Camp, located on the Mojave Reservation in Arizona. Through their friendship, they help each other rediscover their cultural traditions and history. Together, they find the courage and confidence to move forward in an uncertain world. The opera explores the artistic and cultural differences and similarities of the two cultures and connects to grade-level curriculum in history, social science and world cultures, as well as California Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts.
- Dates: February 21 to May 6, 2011
All workshops are scheduled for one class period, one day each week between 9:00am and 3:00pm. One performance will be scheduled between May 16 and 27, 2011. This program is ideal for single track (traditional) schools. This program may not work for all multi-track schools. Contact us for more information.

CLASSROOM ENRICHMENT
VOICES FOR TOLERANCE - A Project for Justice and Harmony
LA Opera continues to teach tolerance through its Education and Community Programs. Voices for Tolerance is a multi-year program, tailored residencies which encompass, a number of main stage, school, and community-based performances and events, featuring themes of building understanding, social justice, and cooperative action.
As part of the initiative, LA Opera works with school staff to create tailored, multi-week, choral program residencies that celebrate the themes of tolerance and community. The program also provides shorter, intensive residencies to certain rural and underserved schools. This program aims to expand awareness of diversity, foster acceptance and understanding of differences, encourage collaboration and community, while increasing the love of vocal music and the arts. Classroom teachers and site staff work in direct partnership with LA Opera teaching artists to reach these goals.
- Requirements: Participating teachers and site staff must attend a mandatory planning meeting. Interested teachers should contact us for more information.
