Through its many partnerships with schools, LA Opera has the great honor to share the deep emotions, profound dramas, and beautiful music that combine to make opera with thousands of middle and high school students each year. Through programs such as in-school workshops and residencies, the exciting new Opera Prep program, Voices for Tolerance, LA Opera 90012, assemblies and even Opera Clubs on campus, LA Opera offers numerous ways for students to discover a passion for the art form. Some will be inspired by performing in an opera alongside LA Opera professionals while others will become enthralled with the possibility of a new kind of career thanks to a behind-the-scenes tour or workshop. Still others will realize that they have never experienced the level of expert performance they witness when they attend a LA Opera main stage performance. Each of LA Opera's programs for secondary students instills knowledge and appreciation of the operatic arts, as well as inspires students to see the world in new ways.

SECONDARY IN-SCHOOL OPERA: 
OUR FIVE-WEEK PERFORMANCE - FALL 2013

Commissioned by LA Opera and inspired by Edmond Rostand's classic drama "Cyrano de Bergerac," The Letter, by Shane W. Cadman, follows a group of students as they grapple with the same issues of unrequited love, language and perception as in the original masterpiece. Founded in a great work of literature, this In-School Opera is a superb way to integrate the arts into the overall curriculum and an example of how easily the classics can be applied to daily life.

What can students gain?

• Self discipline and cooperation while working as an ensemble
• Trust in each other to reach a common goal
• The ability to follow directions on and off stage
• Music fundamentals and basic vocal technique
• Theater fundamentals and basic staging
• A working understanding of how to read and follow a libretto
• The ability to integrate several art disciplines into a well-organized performance
• The ability to use the vocabulary of opera and theater to describe their experience
• Focused work in articulation, pronunciation and memorization, while exploring a story connected to the school curriculum

What can teachers gain?

• An opportunity to support student exposure to, and participation in, the arts
• Techniques for incorporating the arts into their classroom
• An intensive introduction to the operatic art form, as well as teaching materials and lesson plans to connect the program to literature, social science, history, world cultures and language skills

Program Details:Teacher attendance is required at a preparatory in-service on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 4:00pm at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

Maximum of 50 students per school

Dates: Students will meet with LA Opera teaching artists nine times between August 26 and October 27, 2013. All workshops are scheduled for one class period, one day each week between 9:00am and 3:00pm. One performance will be scheduled between November 4 and November 16, 2013. This program is ideal for single track (traditional) schools. This program may not work for all multi-track schools. Enrollment is open to 10 schools within a 30-mile radius of the Music Center.

Fee: The school participation fee for the Secondary In-School Opera program is $999.

VOICES FOR TOLERANCE: 
A RESIDENCY PROJECT FOR JUSTICE AND HARMONY

  Classroom teachers partner with LA Opera teaching artists to create, multi-week, choral programs that foster a love of music and are integrated into the curriculum, featuring themes of community building, social justice, and cooperative action. Projects culminate in live performance and have included original opera based on classroom personal heritage projects, choral recitals exploring folk and protest music from around the world, and a pageant inspired by the Greek Olympics. Voices for Tolerance schools are invited to attend opera performances at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The program also provides shorter, intensive residencies to certain rural and underserved schools.

Bring Your Students to the Opera and Make Career Connections
Opera Prep combines the opportunity to see one of LA Opera's productions and experience a behind-the-scenes encounter with one of the many careers that bring the productions to the stage. Teachers may choose to apply to bring their students to a final dress rehearsal (or performance) for one of LA Opera's seven mainstage, world-class operas. LA Opera will assist teachers in preparing their students and chaperones through an in-service seminar. Teachers will receive an educators' guide, a CD and/or DVD of the opera, cross-curriculum activities and a visit by a member of LA Opera's Community Educators program.

Accepted teachers will be required to attend a mandatory Saturday in-service. Teachers can apply to bring a maximum of 50 students and chaperones by submitting one original lesson plan and one chaperone guide based on information provided by LA Opera.

Program Requirements:
Accepted applicants must be high school students who have not participated in LA Opera 90012 in the past. Participants must be able to attend an orientation, with their chaperone, on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at 6:30pm at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Applicants must also be able to attend all four operas.

Deadline: Applications must be postmarked or delivered to LA Opera via electronic media by Monday, October 22, 2012. Finalists will be notified via e-mail by Monday, October 19, 2012. A limited number of students will be selected. Tickets are limited and non-transferable for use only by the selected students.

ASSEMBLY PROGRAMS

 LA Opera is proud to offer fun and interactive recitals geared toward students and families. Each assembly is available for campuses as well as festivals and special events. LA Opera's Community Educators are available for group presentations to further enrich the experience.

SING OUT LOUD!
No experience is necessary to get the most out of Sing Out Loud!, a 45-minute program featuring artists from LA Opera performing operatic favorites. Teacher materials are available to further enhance this program. This program is geared for all audiences.

Dates: All assemblies are available for booking throughout the school year, based on availability.
Equipment: A tuned, acoustic piano in the performance area is required for all assemblies
Fees: Sing Out Loud!: $900 for one and $1,250 for two same-day, back-to-back assemblies.

OPERA CLUBS

 An ideal activity during or after school, an Opera Club enhances any arts curriculum by giving students the opportunity to expand their study and appreciation of opera. Opera Clubs can enjoy visits from one of our Community Educators at club meetings for a variety of fun and educational activities. Opera Club participants are eligible for special benefits, including complimentary dress rehearsal and/or performance tickets when available.
