Associate Director of Development, Major Gifts
Los Angeles Opera seeks an experienced professional who will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to identify and solicit annual gifts of five and six figures and above. In addition, this position will be charged with the cultivation and stewardship of donors capable of significant annual support for a variety of institutional and artistic priorities, as well as the management and tracking of all activities related to this process. This position will interface regularly with members of the Board of Directors.
Qualified candidates will have a college degree and a minimum of 5 years progressively responsible experience in major gifts fundraising in an annual giving program with goals of $10M or more, well developed computer skills, familiarity with a donor management database, an enthusiasm for the performing arts and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, multi-tasking environment.

Major Gifts Officer
The Los Angeles Opera has an exciting opportunity for a Major Gifts Officer who will be responsible for managing and growing the patron program by implementing various strategies to acquire new donors and renewals of gifts. This position actively solicits donors for gifts of $3,500 and above. Some activities will include hosting meals with donors and prospects, attending performances, and otherwise representing the L.A. Opera in a positive fashion to the donor community.
Qualified candidates will have a BA or BS degree in a related field or equivalent experience in addition to at least 5 years of experience in development, especially for a non-profit arts organization. This individual must have the ability to deal discreetly with sensitive, confidential and proprietary information. Human Resources and Finance Coordinator
Los Angeles Opera has an exciting opportunity available for a Human Resources and Finance Coordinator, reporting to both the Chief Financial Officer and the Director of Human Resources/Labor Relations.
The Human Resources and Finance Coordinator will have the opportunity to interact with all departments at LA Opera, both artistic and administrative, union and non-union. The position will provide support in employment, workers' compensation, health and safety, recruitment, employee events, policy administration, musical instrument insurance and labor relations. The Human Resources and Finance Coordinator will provide general ledger account reconciliation for payroll-related and other accounts and provide general support to the Controller and CFO in budget, reporting and audit functions. The Human Resources and Finance Coordinator will also be responsible for new hire orientation, screening job applicants, helping to coordinate internship programs, assisting in the preparation for union contract negotiations, administration of workers' compensation claims, maintenance of various staff listings online and in performances publications and other duties as assigned.
Qualified candidates will have a BA/BS degree or equivalent work experience. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and proficiency in Word, Excel and Outlook required. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work well with all levels of staff. Discretion, diplomacy, sensitivity to confidential information and tact are a must. Experience in human resources highly desirable. Prior experience in a non-profit or performing arts environment strongly preferred. Must be available to work overtime hours as required.

Costume Crafts Assistant
Los Angeles Opera has an opening for a motivated Costume Crafts Assistant. Qualified applicants must have a strong working knowledge of general costume crafts. Millinery skills and general dye skills are required.

Solo Artists

Orchestra
Auditions for orchestra musicians are held only when positions become available. Orchestra position announcements will be posted here, and in two publications - "International Musician" and "Overture."
Chorus
Los Angeles Opera announces Chorus auditions for the 2012-2013 season. Auditions are by invitation only. Please download the application information here. Applications must be submitted on or before 5:00pm PST on Monday, February 13, 2012.
Professional singers with training and experience with operatic literature and performance are encouraged to apply. Due to the season's casting requirements, tenors and basses are especially encouraged to apply.
Each production of the season is cast individually. There are no full-time positions in the Chorus.
Audition process
Singers will be asked to prepare two selections from the standard operatic repertory. Both pieces should be in different languages and both should be in languages other than English. An accompanist will be provided for all auditions. Singers may also be tested on their musicianship (sight reading and tonal memory, i.e. the ability to sing back a melody played on the piano) and lyric diction in French, German and Italian. At the audition, singers will also be required to submit paperwork on their availability (based on a preliminary rehearsal and performance schedule) and their ability to fulfill special requirements (as listed for each production).
Dancers
Dance auditions are held on an "as needed" basis for productions which include roles for dancers. Dance audition announcements will be posted here. Dancers wishing to receive audition information by email should submit a picture, resume and cover letter to dancersubmissions@laopera.com. Submissions will be kept on file and dancers will be contacted about applicable audition opportunities.
Supernumeraries
Auditions for supernumeraries ("extras") are held on an "as needed" basis for productions which include parts for non-speaking, non-singing performers. LA Opera seeks supernumeraries with varying levels of experience according to the needs of the production. While some people who work as supernumeraries are professional actors or specialty performers (e.g. jugglers, acrobats, stilt walkers, actors trained in stage combat), others are opera enthusiasts who have no previous acting or performing experience but enjoy being onstage.
Supernumerary audition announcements will be posted here, and may also be posted on casting websites such as "LA Casting" and "Actors Access."

Submissions will be kept on file and performers will be contacted about applicable auditions.

The Opera League of Los Angeles, the primary volunteer support organization for LA Opera, and its members work with LA Opera staff on a wide variety of programs including the Opera Prep program, Teacher Training sessions, Saturday Mornings at the Opera, Community Educators, and much more.
In addition to volunteer opportunities, the Opera League of Los Angeles offers its members informative educational programs including seminars and many social activities focused on opera with the aim on expanding the appreciation of opera throughout Greater Los Angeles and the surrounding counties.

Education and Community Programs Intern (Credit only)
The LA Opera seeks an Education and Community Programs Intern who will report to the Director and Associate Director of Education and Community Programs. The intern will help to produce and present programs for the community both at the Music Center and throughout Los Angeles County. Internship activities will include providing administrative support to outreach initiatives including the In-School Opera, Opera Prep, the community opera at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, management of Volunteer Community Educators and Library Project, and Senior Center Dress Rehearsal. The intern will attend planning and production meetings and take notes in order to observe the process of producing operas and arts education programs. Some telephone usage, filing, record keeping, and database management are also involved. Schedule may include some nights and weekends.
Qualified candidates must receive credit from an accredited college or university for the internship. This is a non-paid position. Qualified candidates will currently be pursuing a four-year degree, and must be computer literate with some experience in Windows, Microsoft Office, and database software. Graduates may be eligible as long as college credit can be received. Knowledge of and/or interest in opera or classical music is a plus.

Marketing/Public Relations Intern (Credit only)
Los Angeles Opera currently has internship opportunities in our Marketing/Public Relations department. These positions are available to hard-working students interested in film or online communications. Responsibilities will include creating and editing videos and podcasts for the web and ensuring that materials meet the Marketing/PR goals of the Company.
Qualified candidates must receive credit from an accredited college or university for the internship and be able to intern part-time through December 2011. Scheduling is flexible depending upon interns' academic schedules. These are non-paid positions. Graduates may be eligible as long as college credit can be received. Applicants must have excellent communication skills and an entrepreneurial attitude with disciplined work ethic. Candidates must be computer savvy and have video creating or editing experience. No experience with opera is required. Limited weekend and evening work may be required. Upon completion of an internship, interns will receive a detailed written evaluation and have multiple projects to add to their portfolio.

Artistic Administration Intern (Credit Only)
LA Opera seeks an Artistic Administration Intern to plan the logistics for guest artists coming to Los Angeles Opera for productions in 2012. The intern will perform a research project to help secure foreign artist work visas. Research activities will include compiling each artist's materials such as recording lists, critical reviews, and work samples. Interns may be in touch with the artists' managers, other opera companies or even the artists themselves to secure the necessary support materials for the visa applications. The intern may also research travel and housing options and prepare arrival information for these artists. The intern will report to LA Opera's Artist Services Manager.
Qualified candidates must receive credit from an accredited college or university for the internship. This is a non-paid position. Graduates may be eligible as long as college credit can be received. Candidates must be computer literate with some experience in Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, database software, and e-mail. Interest in opera or music is a plus. This internship will take place in Summer 2011 and hours worked will be determined with the selected candidate.

Production Intern (Credit only)
Los Angeles Opera has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in arts administration. The Production Intern will assist with a variety of organizational projects including updating current artist databases and interfacing with the IT department and Manager of Chorus, Dancers and Supers to implement a new master database. Activities will also include reviewing and organizing general submissions from performers, updating Company production records, and assisting with the organization and running of departmental auditions.
