Chorus
Applications for the 2013-2014 season Chorus auditions are no longer being accepted. If you are interested in auditioning for the 2014-2015 season please check here for more information to be posted in late December/early January.
Professional singers with training and experience with operatic literature and performance are encouraged to apply. Each production of the season is cast individually. There are no full-time positions in the chorus.
Audition process
Singers will be asked to prepare two selections from the standard operatic repertory. Both pieces should be in different languages. An accompanist will be provided for all auditions. Singers may also be tested on their musicianship (sight reading and tonal memory, i.e. the ability to sing back a melody played on the piano) and lyric diction in French, German and Italian. At the audition, singers will also be required to submit paperwork on their availability (based on a preliminary rehearsal and performance schedule) and their ability to fulfill special requirements (as listed for each production).
Dancers
Dance auditions are held on an "as needed" basis for productions which include roles for dancers. Dance audition announcements will be posted here. Dancers wishing to receive audition information by email should submit a picture, resume and cover letter to dancersubmissions@laopera.com. Submissions will be kept on file and dancers will be contacted about applicable audition opportunities.
Supernumeraries
Auditions for supernumeraries ("extras") are held on an "as needed" basis for productions which include parts for non-speaking, non-singing performers. LA Opera seeks supernumeraries with varying levels of experience according to the needs of the production. While some people who work as supernumeraries are professional actors or specialty performers (e.g. jugglers, acrobats, stilt walkers, actors trained in stage combat), others are opera enthusiasts who have no previous acting or performing experience but enjoy being onstage.
Supernumerary audition announcements will be posted here, and may also be posted on casting websites such as "LA Casting" and "Actors Access."
A supernumerary application form can be downloaded by clicking here. If you would like to receive audition information by email, please complete this form and mail it, along with a picture (and resume, if you have one) to the address listed on the form. Submissions will be kept on file and performers will be contacted about applicable auditions.
