Database support and services

Los Angeles Opera, the United States' fourth largest opera company has an immediate opening for a Database Support Technician. The Technician will provide end-user support on all lines of business applications including, but not limited to:  Tessitura, Tstats, EpiServer CMS, Microsoft Office 2010 and Adobe Acrobat. Previous experience of Tessitura is not required but desirable.

The ideal candidate will be working with Los Angeles Opera and the Music Center staff.  Strong verbal skills and professional attitude are necessary, as well as an eagerness to learn new and challenging skills.  Training will be provided.

Costume Crafts Assistant

Los Angeles Opera Costume Shop has an opening for a motivated Costume Crafts Assistant for our 2013/14 Season. Qualified applicants must have a strong working knowledge of general costume crafts. Millinery skills and general dye skills are required. Candidates must have the ability to meet tight deadlines, work independently and as part of a team, and must possess excellent communication skills. Solo Artists

LA Opera grants auditions for principal roles to professional opera singers on an invitation-only basis.

Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program

The Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program is the professional artist development program of LA Opera. For more information, visit the Young Artist Program page.

Orchestra

SECOND OBOE/ ENGLISH HORN

Auditions will be held on April 9, 2013 in Los Angeles.

Preliminary screening of candidates will be by CD and resume submission. The submission deadline is February 22, 2013.

LA Opera is a per-service orchestra.  There is no minimum salary guarantee.

Chorus

Applications for the 2013-2014 season Chorus auditions are no longer being accepted. If you are interested in auditioning for the 2014-2015 season please check here for more information to be posted in late December/early January. 

Professional singers with training and experience with operatic literature and performance are encouraged to apply. Each production of the season is cast individually. There are no full-time positions in the chorus.

Audition process 
Singers will be asked to prepare two selections from the standard operatic repertory. Both pieces should be in different languages. An accompanist will be provided for all auditions. Singers may also be tested on their musicianship (sight reading and tonal memory, i.e. the ability to sing back a melody played on the piano) and lyric diction in French, German and Italian. At the audition, singers will also be required to submit paperwork on their availability (based on a preliminary rehearsal and performance schedule) and their ability to fulfill special requirements (as listed for each production).

Dancers

Dance auditions are held on an "as needed" basis for productions which include roles for dancers. Dance audition announcements will be posted here. Dancers wishing to receive audition information by email should submit a picture, resume and cover letter to dancersubmissions@laopera.com. Submissions will be kept on file and dancers will be contacted about applicable audition opportunities.

Supernumeraries

Auditions for supernumeraries ("extras") are held on an "as needed" basis for productions which include parts for non-speaking, non-singing performers. LA Opera seeks supernumeraries with varying levels of experience according to the needs of the production. While some people who work as supernumeraries are professional actors or specialty performers (e.g. jugglers, acrobats, stilt walkers, actors trained in stage combat), others are opera enthusiasts who have no previous acting or performing experience but enjoy being onstage.

Supernumerary audition announcements will be posted here, and may also be posted on casting websites such as "LA Casting" and "Actors Access."

Volunteer

There are numerous, fun ways in which you can become involved with LA Opera as a volunteer. The Opera League of Los Angeles, the primary volunteer support organization for LA Opera, and its members work with LA Opera staff on a wide variety of programs including the Opera Prep program, Teacher Training sessions, Saturday Mornings at the Opera, Community Educators, and much more.

In addition to volunteer opportunities, the Opera League of Los Angeles offers its members informative educational programs including seminars and many social activities focused on opera with the aim on expanding the appreciation of opera throughout Greater Los Angeles and the surrounding counties.

VOLUNTEER AS A COMMUNITY EDUCATOR

Opera League Numerous individuals desire more knowledge about opera - that unique blending of spectacular theatricality and gorgeous music. By joining the LA Opera Community Educators, you can share your love of and appreciation for opera with people interested in learning more. Members of the Opera League of Los Angeles' Community Educators are a team of trained experts who address civic and social organizations, philanthropic groups, schools and library audiences throughout Southern California, free of charge.

Internships

Music Library Intern (Credit Only)

The Los Angeles Opera seeks an intern who will report to the Music Librarian.  Internship activities will include assisting the library staff in a variety of tasks, with the primary responsibility being assistance with the completion of automating the library’s inventory of recordings and scores. The music library staff will also provide opportunities to learn about other areas of opera operations, when possible.

Through their time in the Music Library the intern will greatly expand his/her knowledge of the operatic repertoire, the inner workings of a professional opera company, and general work skills, which will benefit them greatly as they move toward a career in professional music.

Qualified candidates must receive credit from an accredited college or university for the internship. This is a non-paid position. Qualified candidates will currently be pursuing a four-year degree, and must be computer literate with some experience in Windows, Microsoft Office, and database software. Knowledge of opera or classical music is required. Graduates may be eligible as long as college credit can be received.

Development Intern

The Development Intern will contribute to the overall success of LA Opera’s summer fundraising activities, which support the productions, community events, and arts education programs that will occur during Company’s 2013/14 Season. The Development Intern’s primary project will be to assist with the completion of two report templates for the institutional giving team that will be distributed to foundation, government, and corporate funders. Additional projects to support the Development Department may require the intern to conduct donor prospect research, to assist with the individual/institutional giving campaigns (this may entail drafting letters and/or grant proposal templates, tracking pledges, or conducting mailings), and to help with various special events tasks. Some telephone usage, filing, record keeping, and database management may also be involved.

This internship is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.  74 undergraduate interns will participate in the program this year at 74 performing, presenting, and literary nonprofit arts organizations and municipal arts agencies throughout LA County.  In addition to their full-time 10 week paid internship, interns will participate in educational events as part of the program, which is funded by the Getty Foundation.  The educational events are designed to provide interns with a broader perspective of the vibrant arts and cultural landscape of the County.  For additional information on the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Arts Internship Program, and for a complete list of all the internships offered this summer, visit the Arts Commission website at www.lacountyarts.org<http://www.lacountyarts.org/>.

Education and Community Programs Interns (credit only)

LA Opera seeks Education and Community Programs Interns who will report to the Associate Director of Education and Community Programs. The interns will be integral team members in the producing and presenting of programs for the community both at the Music Center and throughout Los Angeles County. The summer interns will work on a variety of projects including, but not limited to:

  • Work with the Education Manager to coordinate a summer institute for teaching artists that will focus on developing tools for adapting and applying LA Opera’s education residency programs to the new Common Core Standards.
  • Further develop our College Advisory Committee, now in its second season, by researching and creating an inventory of college opera outreach programs and helping to create a network of such programs, and activating the “campus ambassador” program of the Committee. 
  • Work with staff to coordinate our two-week, youth Opera Camp and serve as a camp counselor.
  • Research and develop specific study materials the operas of LA Opera’s 2013/14 Season, as well as other community productions.
  • Participate in the development and administration of a continuing education “Summer Camp” for our volunteer Community Educators.

All the interns will participate in planning and production meetings to observe the process of producing operas and arts education programs.  Schedule will include some nights and weekends.
