Opera Camp

LA Opera offers an in-depth youth Opera Camp for singers and non-singers ages 9-17. This unique program has a playful, yet intense focus, offering individual attention and peer collaboration that culminates in community performances alongside professionals. This two week summer camp will be from Monday, July 29 thru Sunday, August 11, 2013.

For Opera Camp 2013, LA Opera will present Brundibár by Hans Krása and Adolf Hoffmeister. Brundibár was originally written for the children of the Jewish orphanage in Prague, Czechoslovakia. With the Nazi takeover of the country, Krása and the Jewish children were sent to the Czech concentration camp, Terezín. The piano score for Brundibár was subsequently smuggled into the camp where it was performed at least 55 times by camp children, including a performance for the International Red Cross Inspectors on June 22, 1944.
