A person is never too young or too old for great stories set to gorgeous music. LA Opera offers an array of family programs that make opera performances accessible to all ages. From the Saturday Mornings at the Opera performances for very young children in the Eva and Marc Stern Grand Hall, to family opera packages and discounted prices for youth ages 9-17 at all opera performances, to special opportunities for partnering senior centers and senior rush tickets…LA Opera will help create your family's greatest memories.

LA Opera thinks you're never too young to enjoy the classics. With that in mind, we are proud to present two Saturday morning, hour-long, interactive performances.

Opera Tales tour

Working in partnership with the County of Los Angeles Public Library, LA Opera has developed this fun, high-energy show, as part of our Library Project, that tours to various County Libraries for free family performances in May 2013.

For the past six seasons, LA Opera has been honored to work with the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown Los Angeles to present free, large-scale, community performances.

THE DOMINGO FAMILY PROGRAM

Our next Family Package opera is Easter weekend, complete with themed activities for families to enjoy together while learning more about opera.

FAMILY PACKAGES INCLUDE:

  • Four tickets to a select performance of Cinderella.
  • Four invitations to meet the cast at a post-performance reception.
  • Exclusive, holiday-themed pre-performance activities designed for families.
  • Access to an exclusive website where your children can listen to music, watch special videos and learn more about the opera stories.

Saturday Mornings At The Opera

LA Opera thinks you're never too young to enjoy the classics. With that in mind, we are proud to present two Saturday morning, hour-long, interactive performances. Delight in familiar arias and wander through enchanting tales of adventure in both original works and beloved favorites adapted for children. 


Fun and creative workshops for children before each performance add to the excitement and prepare the audience with art and music-making activities.


MAY 18, 2013 - DON’T BE AFRAID; IT’S JUST OPERA!

Internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Suzanna Guzmán performs her award-winning show Don't Be Afraid; It's Just Opera! This fun and interactive family program reveals the universal appeal of opera. With this friendly diva as our guide, the audience discovers just how entertaining and moving this beautiful music can be.

FEBRUARY 8, 2014 - THE PROSPECTOR
The Prospector is a rousing tale of California Gold Rush pioneers based on Puccini’s opera The Girl of the Golden West. Adapted by Lee Holdridge and Richard Sparks, The Prospector is set in a mining camp during the 1850s where a prospector charms a group of coyotes with a story of cowboys and miners competing for the love of a strong and beautiful woman.

MAY 10, 2014 – MOZART OPERA TALES
Perfect for the whole family, Mozart Opera Tales is an entertaining introduction to the wonderful stories and melodies of one of opera’s most beloved composers, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. With humor and heart, Mozart Opera Tales celebrates the power of story and music wedded together. Travel with our “opera pals” from LA Opera through the magical moments of some of Mozart’s greatest stories: Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute.

Opera Tales Tour


Opera always begins with a story and LA Opera celebrates the power of the story and the joy of music through its hugely successful Opera Tales productions. Join LA Opera for this fun, high energy show as it tours to libraries in partnership with the County of Los Angeles Public Library. 

Verdi

Celebrating Verdi's 200th birthday, May 4-25 we are touring VERDI OPERA TALES. Featuring four professional opera singers, these “opera pals” perform musical moments from such Verdi opera stories as Falstaff, Simon Boccanegra, Rigoletto, La TraviataIl Trovatore, and La Forza del Destino.

Library Audience

The Opera Tales partnership between
LA Opera and the County of Los Angeles Public Library was established by Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, Fourth District. Generous funding for the Opera Tales tour is provided by Supervisor Don Knabe and the Flora L. Thornton Foundation.

 

Requirements: Program is open only to County of Los Angeles Public Libraries.

Community Opera

Since the 2005/2006 season, LA Opera has been honored to work with the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown Los Angeles to present free, large-scale, community performances including Noye's Fludde, Judas Maccabaeus, and The Festival Play of Daniel under the baton of Maestro James Conlon. These community opera performances include singers, actors and orchestra members from the community, performing alongside professional singers and orchestra members from LA Opera.
