Liping Zhang

A series of outstanding interpretations in both the belcanto and lyric repertoire have established the young Canadian Liping Zhang as one of opera's leading international sopranos, with engagements at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Opera de Paris, the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Over the next few seasons she will return to Covent Garden as Micaela in Carmen, the Opera de Paris in Madama Butterfly and the Metropolitan Opera as Liu in Turandot. Most recently, Liping Zhang has been seen at the Royal Opera Covent Garden as Micaela and Cio-Cio-San.

Liping Zhang came to international attention in the role of Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly), which she has sung at Covent Garden, Den Norske Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Opera de Paris, the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. She has since returned to the Norwegian Opera as Mimi in La Bohème, and sang Gilda in season 2005/06.

In Asia, Liping Zhang has sung Mimi in La Bohème in Hong Kong and Violetta in La Traviata at the Shanghai International Festival, whilst in the USA she has appeared at the New York City Opera as Cio-Cio-San and Mimi, and Baltimore Opera as Cio-Cio-San.

In 2002, Liping Zhang made a stunning Covent Garden debut as Liu in Turandot. She made a triumphant return to Covent Garden in September 2003 as Cio-Cio-San, before returning to Covent Garden three months later to make the house her own with her acclaimed interpretation of Lucia di Lammermoor. She has since returned for critically acclaimed Mimi and Micaela in Carmen.

In November 2003 she sang Cio-Cio-San at Opera Michigan in a performance that critics said, "represents the world standard. This is a singer, indeed a theatrical experience, not to be missed." She made her Met debut in the role in April 2004 and was named in the Metropolitan Opera's website as a notable debutante. She returned to the Met in 2007 as Liu.

Future engagements include: Cio-Cio-San at the Opera de Marseille, the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, the Cincinnati Opera Festival, the Opera de Paris and in Bari, Como, Cremona, Pavia and Brescia; and Micaela in Carmen at the Royal Opera Covent Garden and the Cincinnati Opera Festival.
