German Villar will make his LA Opera debut as Don José in Carmen (November 2008). During the 2007/08 season, he made his La Scala debut as Christian in Alfano's Cyrano de Bergerac as well as his debut in Monte Carlo singing the title role, Cyrano. Additionally he performed Cavaradossi in Tosca and Ismaele in Nabucco in Athens, Siegmund in Die Walküre in Freiburg, Froh in Das Rheingold in Bari and Don Carlo in Madrid. Upcoming performances include Don José in Carmen at the Washington National Opera and in Los Angeles, Respighi's Marie Victoire in Berlin and Cyrano de Bergerac at the Châtelet in Paris.
Last season, Mr. Villar made his debut at the new Palau de las Artes in Valencia as Christian in Cyrano de Bergerac and as Froh in Das Rheingold, which he repeated in Florence at the Maggio Musicale conducted by Zubin Mehta. Other performances included Don José in Carmen in Calabria, Italy, and opera recitals at Kronborg Castle in Copenhagen.
German Villar made his debut in 2001 in a concert performance of La Traviata in his native Valencia and in the United States as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Opera Brooklyn in New York. Since then he has appeared as Lensky in Eugene Onegin and Alfredo in La Traviata with Opera North USA, Pinkerton in the 1904 La Scala version of Madama Butterfly for the centennial celebration of the work in New York, Cavaradossi in Tosca with Shreveport Opera, and Pollione in Norma with Virginia Opera.
As a soloist with the Stadtheater Giessen, Germany, Mr. Villar performed Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Loris in Fedora, Pollione in Norma, Mitch in A Streetcar named Desire, Fenton in Falstaff, Charles VII in The Maid of Orleans, Lionel in Martha, Ismaele in Nabucco, Don José in Carmen and the title role in Zampa.
Other appearances for the young tenor include a concert version of I Lombardi in the role of Oronte and Luigi in Il Tabarro in Chiari, Italy, as well as Lieder recitals in Cuenca and Valencia and concerts with the Orchestra of Castellon at the Palau de la Musica in Valencia and title role in Werther in Israel.
Mr. Villar created the role of Juan de Padilla in the premiere of the new opera Juana by Enric Palomar in Hallé and Barcelona.
A winner of the 2002 Francisco Viñas Voice Competition, German Villar is a graduate of the Music Conservatory of Valencia and has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards.
