Mark Jonathan

Lighting designer Mark Jonathan's many productions in international opera include Hansel and Gretel, Ariadne auf Naxos, Peter Grimes, Falstaff and Don Pasquale for LA Opera as well as Gianni Schicchi, Bluebeard's Castle (Washington National Opera); Salome and Das Gehege (Bavarian State Opera); Venus and Adonis, Dido and Aeneas (Vlaamse Opera); Samson et Dalila and Carmen (Israeli Opera); Die Entführung (Strasbourg) and extensive work for the Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

His designs for musical theater include Marlene playing in the West End, Paris and Broadway and Babes in Arms, The Wizard of Oz, Sweet Charity, Half a Sixpence and Peggy Sue Got Married in the UK.

His many ballet designs include classical and contemporary work for the Royal Ballet, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, Scottish Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre, Berlin Staatsoper Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet and include Sylvia for Royal Ballet in London and the American Ballet Theatre in New York. The Royal Ballet's Sleeping Beauty has also been performed in China, Japan, Mexico and in the USA.

Mark has been an Associate Artist of the Chichester Festival Theatre since 2006, also lighting their critically acclaimed production of Dicken's Nicholas Nickleby which transferred to London's West End and to Princess of Wales Theatre, Toronto. He was Head of Lighting at the Royal National Theatre from 1993-2003 where his lighting designs included Skylight (Olivier Award for Best New Play) and Honk! (Olivier Award for Best New Musical). His extensive work in the UK includes many productions in the West End and the UK's leading repertory theatres, and most recently on Free Outgoing for the Royal Court Theatre.

Future projects include Der Freischütz for Finnish National Opera, Aladdin for the Japanese National Ballet in Tokyo choreographed by David Bintley, Othello for the Royal Shakespeare Company and William Friedkin's production of An Inconvenient Truth for La Scala Milan in 2011.

Mark received a Drama Desk nomination for most Outstanding Lighting for Prometheus Bound, New York last year.
