Romanian mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose, who makes her LA Opera debut as Veronica Quaife in the U.S. premiere of Howard Shore's The Fly, has captured critical and popular acclaim in leading opera houses and concert halls. Her career has taken her to the world's most prestigious houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera and Deutsche Oper Berlin. Ms. Donose has worked with some of the world's finest conductors including Roberto Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Sir Colin Davis, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Charles Dutoit, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Kent Nagano, and Donald Runnicles.
During the summer of 2007 Ms. Donose sang the title role of La Cenerentola at the Glyndebourne Festival. Other appearances for the 2007/08 season include returns to the Deutsche Oper Berlin for performances of Rossini's La Donna del Lago and gala performances at the Palais des Beaux-Arts as well as in Singapore with Dmitri Hvorostovsky. She will sing the role of Veronica Quaife in the world premiere of The Fly at the Théâtre du Chatelet in Paris to conclude her 2007/08 season.
Her 2006/07 season included a new production of La Cenerentola with the Opera Company of Philadelphia and a concert performance of Rossini's Otello at Carnegie Hall with the Opera Orchestra of New York. The New York Times hailed her performance as "the triumph of the opera" and praised her "musically rich characterization, earthy-voiced and beguiling Desdemona." She also performed Mahler's Second Symphony with the National Philharmonic of Russia in Moscow under Andreij Danilov, followed by Anna Bolena at the Vienna Konzerthaus under Bertrand de Billy, and La Damnation de Faust with the San Francisco Symphony under Charles Dutoit.
Ruxandra Donose came to prominence with performances as Sesto in Giulio Cesare at Covent Garden, a role she has also sung at the Glyndebourne Festival and San Francisco Opera. Highlights of her operatic career include Nicklausse in Les Contes d'Hoffmann at the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera and San Francisco Opera. She also sang Charlotte in a new production of Werther at Covent Garden and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Adalgisa in Norma at the Vienna State Opera and Canadian Opera Company, Idamante in Idomeneo at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and San Diego Opera, and the title role in a new production of La Cenerentola at the Glyndebourne Festival. She has distinguished herself as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro in performances at the Vienna State Opera, Dresden Staatsoper, and her debuts at the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris and Teatro Real in Madrid. She also appeared as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos with Opera Company of Philadelphia. Other roles include Fyodor in Boris Godunov, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Mélisande in Pelléas et Mélisande, and the title role in L'Incoronazione di Poppea.
As a winner of the 1990 ARD International Vocal Competition in Munich, she had a highly acclaimed debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1992 as Varvara in Kát'a Kabanová. Since then she has maintained a close relationship with Vienna, returning for such roles as Pierotto in a new production of Linda di Chamounix, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Antigone in Enescu's Oedipe and the title role in Carmen. In 1995 she made her Salzburg Festival debut as Isaura in Tancredi. Deutsch Gramophone released a DVD of her performance as Ramiro in La Finta Giardiniera in Salzburg in 2006. The release formed part of the ambitious Mozart 22 project that staged and recorded Mozart's complete operas during Mozart's 250th anniversary year.
As a concert artist, Ruxandra Donose regularly performs with leading orchestras around the world. One of her signature roles is Marguerite in La Damnation de Faust, which she has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zürich, the Berlin Sinfonie-Orchester, the Philharmonia Orchestra, and Orchestre de Paris. Ms. Donose made her debut at Carnegie Hall as Concepción in a concert performance of Ravel's L'Heure Espagnole with the Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of Pierre Boulez, and repeated the role with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. Other performances in the USA include Bach's Magnificat with the Philadelphia Orchestra led by Wolfgang Sawallisch, Hänsel in concert performances with the Boston Symphony under Marek Janowski, Berlioz' Les Nuits d'Été and the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos with the Minnesota Orchestra, and Mozart's Requiem with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pittsburgh and Atlanta Symphonies. A regular on the European concert scene, she has sung Mozart's Mass in C major at the Salzburg Festival and Dvorak's Stabat Mater with the Dresden Staatskapelle under Giuseppe Sinopoli. She has also distinguished herself as an interpreter of Mahler's great orchestral works, performing Das Lied von der Erde with the Orchestre de Paris, his Second Symphony with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen in Hong Kong. She has also appeared with the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchester in performances of Ravel's Shéhérazade and De Falla's El amor brujo, and with the Munich Philharmonic in Bach's Mass in b minor.
