Jennifer Black

As a native of Houston, Texas, American lyric soprano Jennifer Black will make her LA Opera debut as Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica (September 2008). During the 2007/08 season, she returns for her third and final year to the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Ms. Black was involved in the productions of the company's Ariadne auf Naxos and Carmen during her first year at the Met, and made her debut as a Woman of Crete in Idomeneo during the 2006/2007 season, also performing the Heavenly Voice in Don Carlo and First Alms Collector in the new production of Suor Angelica. During the 2007/08 season, Ms. Black will make Met appearances in Le Nozze di Figaro and Manon Lescaut.

In the 2007/08 season, Ms. Black returned to Santa Fe Opera for her first Mimi in La Bohème in June of 2007 after having made her debut as Micäela in the company's production of Carmen in 2006. Having made her debut with New York City Opera as Musetta in April 2006, Ms. Black returns as Micäela in October of 2007.

In recital, Ms. Black has performed as a guest artist with the Artist Series of Sarasota, Texas State University, Texas Lutheran University, with harpist Grace Cloutier at Carnegie Hall, Milan's Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi, as well as solo recitals in New York City's Goethe Institute and Bruno Walter Theater.

Ms. Black was most recently awarded a 2007 George London/Leonie Rysanek Award and received second place in the 2007 Loren L. Zachary Society Competition. In September she will travel to London to compete in the Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition. A 2000 Metropolitan Opera National Council Awards finalist and a recipient of a 2005 Sullivan Grant, she was also a finalist in the Dallas Opera Guild Competition, Houston Grand Opera's Eleanor McCollum Competition, the Connecticut Opera Guild and the MacAllister Awards.

A graduate of the Yale School of Music, Ms. Black performed the title roles of Kat'a Kabanova, Suor Angelica, and was also seen as Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte. Ms. Black has performed with the San Francisco Opera's Merola Program, having sung the roles of Nella in Gianni Schicchi, Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica and Musetta.
