John Caird

Director

John Caird is an Honorary Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, a regular guest director at the National Theatre and Principal Guest Director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre, Stockholm. He has directed more than 20 productions of classic and new plays for the Royal Shakespeare Company. His work in opera includes Don Carlos, Aida and Don Giovanni for Welsh National Opera; Don Carlos, Tosca and the world premiere of Andre Previn’s Brief Encounter for Houston Grand Opera; and his own new version of Candide for the National Theatre in London. He directed the current U.S. tour of Daddy Long Legs, for which he wrote the book. He directed the original London and Broadway productions of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (Olivier, Tony, and Evening Standard awards) and Les Misérables (Tony and Outer Critics Circle awards). Other work includes Song and Dance (Palace Theatre); The Seagull (National Theatre); Stanley (National Theatre and Broadway); Jane Eyre (Broadway); Hamlet (National Theatre); Humble Boy (National Theatre, West End, New York); Macbeth (Almeida Theatre); The Beggar’s Opera (Nissay Theatre, Tokyo); Kinshu (Galaxy Theatre, Tokyo); and The Merry Wives of Windsor, Dance of Death, The Tempest, and Romeo and Juliet (Royal Dramatic Theatre, Stockholm).
