Johan Engels has designed LA Opera productions of L'Elisir d'Amore (1996, 1999, 2009) and Otello (2008). He studied at the University of Pretoria, then moved to England in 1980. Productions include Khovanschina, Welsh National Opera; Maskarade, Bregenz and Covent Garden; Osud, Vienna; L’Etoile and Agrippina, Zurich; Don Carlos, WNO and Canadian Opera Company; Le Villi, Vienna State Opera; The Magic Flute, Vienna Folk Opera; Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, Opera de Marseilles; Turandot, Salzburg Festival; Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, Glimmerglass Festival and New York City Opera; and Les Troyens at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. His designs for Electra, first performed at the Chichester Festival Theatre, went into London’s Donmar Theatre and then to Broadway.
